Nokia N900 running Android 2.2 Froyo (Update: Now runs Gingerbread)

dj_steve @ TMO has got Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) OS running on the Nokia N900 mobile phone and have posted a teaser video to show how it runs. (project name is Nitroid) This is just a taste of what is to come and dj_steve is working hard to get Android to be a fully useable replacement OS for the Nokia N900. Considering it already can be setup to dual boot between its original Maemo5 OS and Android, this project is becoming far more promising for the N900 users worldwide. (Not to mention the upcoming MeeGo OS that may also be a full alternative OS for the N900)

You can follow dj_steve’s progress at his twitter page.

UPDATE: Official Nitdroid website/forum – http://nitdroid.com

UPDATE: – Adobe Flash 10.1 is also working in the web browser although not very fast and not stable in some sites such as youtube.

Gingerbread 2.3.4 now works near perfectly on the N900.
Pretty much all games works and you can even send/receive SMS as well.

A great article showing off many Nokia N900 Apps

Sergejs of Phonespot has posted a huge article listing some must have or must try apps for the Nokia N900 with screenshots to boot. It shows off what the N900 and its community of developers are capable of and its worth mentioning that 99% of these apps are all free as well.

eg. Chromium (open source version of Google Chrome) Web Browser running on the N900.

Note that Sergejs’ list is just the tip of the iceberg as the number of free open source apps for the Noka N900 is well over 500 and growing rapidly by the day.

Nokia N900 to get full navigation version of Ovi Maps?

Now here’s something interesting. A recent interview with Pino Bonetti from the Ovi Maps team by Ovi Blog has sprung up a very interesting blurb about the possibility that the full “free” voice guided navigation version of Ovi Maps is indeed coming to the N900’s Maemo OS.

Here’s the culprit snippet from the long interview:

I don’t know about you but to me, that’s quite a decent indication that proper Ovi Maps is in the works for the N900. Unfortunately he didn’t elaborate any more and all I can say to the N900 users worldwide is that it may be coming. When, I don’t know. But I don’t think it’s gooing to be any time soon….
